Join us on a journey from oak to ship in what is now the World Heritage Site Karlskrona. The exhibition tells the story of life in Karlskrona then and now, from the 1600s to present day. Meet the people inside and outside the core of the shipbuilding, in a city buzzing with life and influences from different countries.
Karlskrona was founded in 1680 to meet the need for a fortification in southern Sweden. It was then one of the most modern naval bases in the world. Sweden's foremost shipbuilders, architects and fortification builders gathered to plan what was expected to become the ideal naval city.
Karlskrona attracted European merchants who early on gave the city an international character. Karlskrona, in turn, was able to serve as an inspiration for many other European countries' naval facilities and also gained a great national influence. For a period of time, the shipyard in Karlskrona was the largest workplace in Sweden.
